Mr. Edwin Murwira, HelpAge Zimbabwe Board Chairman narrated to CZI the ordeal of older persons in Zimbabwe. He indicated that there is need for the government of Zimbabwe to consider signing into law, the Bill of older persons.
Zimbabwe was one of the first African countries to formulate an ageing policy. Following the Madrid International plan of Action on Ageing in 2002, the Bill for Older Persons was formulated in Zimbabwe. The Madrid International plan of Action on ageing, recommended that, amongst other issues, governments set up policies that protect and meet the needs of older persons and promote their contribution in society.
The Bill for Older Persons has been circulating in key government ministries since 2002 and nothing has materialized as yet. If passed into law, the Act shall see the formation of a Board that looks into matters affecting older persons in the country. The Act will also pave way for the development of a fund that will be allocated to every older person at agreed time frames.
