It was all smiles on the 17th of June 2011, when Africa Lotto donated a tone of food and none-food items to Melfort Farm old people’s home.
The donation, composing of basic necessities and luxuries surprised many older persons at the home for they could not remember the last time they received such a huge donation, “Vanotenge vasimudza shop yese” (it’s as if they have brought the whole shop).
The donation composed of :- 150x2kg’s sugar, 25x2litres squish squash, 25x2kg’s flour, 25 packs tea bags, 50x250grammes Cremora, 100x250g loose biscuits, 200kg’s rice, 25x 500g peanut butter, 50x2 litres cooking oil, 25 units Cocoa butter Vaseline, 100 tabs bath soap, 50 boxes matches, 50 x 6 pockets candles, 20 litres liquid washing soap, 100 bars laundry soap, 30 tins tomatoes and onion mix, 50kg sugar beans, 400 rolls toilet paper, 200x10kg roller meal, 25 blankets, 25 cups, 25 big plates, 25 small plates, 5 pots, and 2 crates of soft drinks.
Mr Garikai Francis, Melfort Farm Institute Administrator indicated that this donation will ensure adequate food supply for at most 5 months. He also said that, “the donation will ease pressure on Melfort farm and HelpAge Zimbabwe and at least give them enough time to focus on income-generating projects”. Currently the poultry project has been doing well. Proceeds from the project have seen the home buying a new deep freezer. Although the project is on hold at the moment due to renovations of the fowl run, the project has potential to finance the home if adequate resources are channeled to it. Apart from the poultry project, the home is also running a goat rearing project as well as rearing rabbits.
Africa Lotto General Manager Mrs Eva Sande indicated that this was just but the beginning of a relationship. Africa Lotto is determined to support deserving charities in Zimbabwe. Older people’s homes are some of the charities that need continuous support.
Africa lotto is an organisation with a mission to develop a nationwide lotto system that offers the majority of people the best opportunity to play the lotto and win a lot of money and thus at the same time contribute immensely to charitable organisations through the Gaming Board. The organisation was formed in November 2008.
